I explained to him [Ramsay] that the German military situation was hopeless and that Germany could hold on at the most another one or two more years. In my opinion a total breakdown would follow. I considered it absolutely necessary for Finland to put out peace feelers now in order to extricate itself from German clutches which, I thought, was not weighing as heavily on Finland any more. Furthermore, I told Ramsay that in case he wished to use it, I had a direct connection to Roosevelt. There was in Stockholm at present a special representative, Mr. Hewitt, who was a patient of mine and whom I could use as a point of liaison. I told Ramsay that I thought, however, it advisable that the Finnish Minister in Stockholm, Griepenberg, should conduct these negotiations. Ramsay was much pleased to learn about this connection and asked me to bring about the connection Griepenberg-Hewitt.
